Mood and emotional disorders are a category of mental health conditions defined by significant disruptions in a person’s emotional state. These disruptions go beyond ordinary sadness, stress, or frustration. They involve sustained changes in mood that interfere with relationships, work, physical health, and the ability to function day to day. Common mood and emotional disorders include major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia), and stress-related conditions. Many people also experience overlapping issues with self-esteem and emotional regulation that stem from or contribute to these conditions.
Beyond major depression and bipolar disorder, there are several related mood conditions that affect emotional stability. Persistent depressive disorder (dysthymia) involves chronic low-grade depression lasting two or more years. Cyclothymic disorder involves milder mood swings that do not meet full criteria for bipolar disorder but still disrupt daily life. Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and seasonal affective disorder (SAD) are also evaluated and treated at Cervello-Wellness. Our providers work to identify the specific diagnosis driving symptoms rather than applying a general label.
